Régis Le Bris outlines José Fonte role and impact in Sunderland coaching team | OneFootball

Régis Le Bris says José Fonte’s European know-how and recent playing perspective will bring a fresh dimension to Sunderland’s coaching staff.

According to Sunderland Echo, Fonte began work on Monday after ending his playing career at the close of last season. The former Southampton and Portugal defender featured at major international tournaments and took part in numerous European campaigns.

Le Bris said it has taken time to find the right balance between roles over the past two seasons, and that he enjoyed the last four or five months as the club surged to Europa League qualification. He believes Fonte’s high standards and knowledge can enhance that workflow without disrupting it, and he hopes they will quickly find the right balance.

Fonte will work alongside Michael Proctor and Alessandro Barcherini, set-piece coach James Brayne, Chief Analyst Isidre Ramón Madir and goalkeeping coach Neil Cutler.

Ghisolfi said Fonte arrives with top-level experience and energy, and that his leadership could add significant value as Sunderland aim to push forward in the Premier League and on the European stage. He added the club were delighted to welcome him.
