Sunderland return to Premier League action on Sunday afternoon, with Régis Le Bris weighing significant selection calls for the visit of Roberto De Zerbi’s Spurs to the Stadium of Light after an improving injury picture.
According to Sunderland Echo, Le Bris confirmed on Friday that Robin Roefs is fit after a hamstring issue and, although Melker Ellborg has deputised well, it would be a major shock if Roefs did not come straight back into goal.
Nordi Mukiele was back on the bench for the Tyne-Wear derby and Le Bris has said he is fit to start. Leaving out Geertruida would be harsh, so Mukiele could move infield, though he has been vital at right-back for much of the season.
With Dan Ballard still sidelined by a hamstring problem, there is a strong case to continue with Luke O’Nien after his impressive second-half display at Newcastle. The alternative is to shift Mukiele to centre-back and keep Geertruida at right-back.
Omar Alderete has rebounded from a slight dip around the turn of the year and produced top-class performances in recent weeks, a major factor in important results during a tricky spell.
Sunderland now look to open the final stretch of the campaign with three crucial points.
