Régis Le Bris’s Sunderland begin their US tour on Saturday night against Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool in Nashville, with an 11pm BST kick-off.
According to Sunderland Echo, the Black Cats have taken an initial squad of 26, with Wilson Isidor arriving after his World Cup break as minutes are shared again.
Goalkeeper Melker Ellborg will get another chance to start, with Robin Roefs due to link up on Sunday following his World Cup commitments.
Jocelin Ta Bi’s visa issue leaves Sunderland without a senior right winger on this tour, which might see Trai Hume pushed higher. If so, it would be no surprise to see Nordi Mukiele shift into the attacking right-back role he has excelled in since last summer.
At centre-back, Dan Ballard could be involved after returning to full training this week, but if Le Bris opts to ease him in then Jenson Seelt is a strong option. He might leave later this summer, yet a standout display at York last week underlined his quality.
With Omar Alderete set to return to Wearside next month after the World Cup, Luke O’Nien has a great chance on this tour to stake a claim for regular minutes this season.
