According to a report by L’Équipe, interest in Jorge Sampoli as Stade Rennais’ next head coach is gaining momentum. The former Olympique de Marseille manager has been out of work since 2023 when he was fired from Brazilian club Flamengo.
The Argentine manager has been keen to return to work and has often been linked with a move back to France. Last winter, Sampaoli was strongly rumoured to be close to joining Olympique Lyonnais. However, Lyon ultimately chose to back then-interim manager Pierre Sage.
The Rennes role is not yet free, but it is looking increasingly likely that Julien Stéphan will be replaced in the near future. The Frenchman has struggled at the club since signing a contract extension in March, and a 4-0 defeat to AJ Auxerre has the hallmarks of a bridge too far.
Rennes sit only two points above the relegation zone and far removed from their goal of returning to Europe at the first time of asking.
