Inter Eye Hojlund Revival Amid United Uncertainty

Hojlund’s Old Flame Reignited

It’s difficult to forget the flashes of brilliance Rasmus Hojlund showed in Serie A. In his brief time at Atalanta, the Danish striker seemed destined for more. His movement, physicality and raw energy suggested a player whose ceiling might stretch beyond even the Premier League’s skyscrapers. And yet, just two years on from Manchester United spending €75 million plus bonuses on him, his name is circling the rumour mills of Italy once again.

According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, Inter Milan have set their sights on Hojlund as a priority target this summer. The plan isn’t immediate ownership – the Nerazzurri are exploring a loan with an option to buy. Manchester United, wary of recouping value for an underwhelming investment, may be willing to entertain the notion. For Inter, this would be a strategic pivot: invest in youth, inject energy into an ageing forward line, and return to familiar territory with a player who once lit up the league.

Project Reboot at San Siro

Inter’s plans for rejuvenation are taking shape under the financial scrutiny of Oaktree, the club’s new custodians. With Marcus Thuram leading the line last season and Lautaro Martinez’s future never far from speculation, there’s a defined need to reinforce the attack. A budget of around €40 million is reportedly available for a marquee signing, and Hojlund fits the brief – both as a long-term investment and as a player eager to reboot a career that has, for now, stalled.

“Il club ne ha presi due, ma sa che ne servono altri… (The club has taken two, but knows it needs more)” said Simone Inzaghi following Inter’s defeat to PSG. He’s not hiding behind vague assessments. The club has already sealed deals for Petar Sucic and Luiz Henrique, but their profiles don’t address the need for a transformative forward. In Hojlund, Inter see not just a striker, but a symbol of continuity with the league’s emerging generation.

Premier League to Serie A – Tale of Transition

Hojlund’s struggles at Old Trafford are emblematic of the wider turbulence at Manchester United. A team without coherent identity has offered little stability to a young striker still learning the trade. The pace of the Premier League, the chaos of management changes, and the burden of expectation have all played their part.

Still, there’s belief in Milan that Hojlund remains untapped potential. The 22-year-old retains admirers in Italy, and Inter’s strategy is focused on precisely this profile. Ange-Yoan Bonny from Parma is another mentioned, but Hojlund, with top-flight pedigree, offers more immediate promise.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

From a Manchester United supporter’s standpoint, the suggestion of Hojlund going out on loan feels bittersweet. There’s no denying his first couple seasons failed to live up to the price tag, but allowing a 22-year-old talent to walk away, even temporarily, could prove short-sighted. Given the club’s repeated failures in nurturing young forwards, this would feel like history repeating itself.

At the same time, one can’t help but wonder whether Serie A suits Hojlund better. The tempo, the tactical structure, the reduced chaos – all potentially more conducive to his development. But if Inter land him on a loan with no firm obligation, United run the risk of watching another player flourish abroad with no guarantee of return.

Still, there’s hope he’s not finished in Manchester. His goals against Athletic Club in the Europa League showed he can rise on big occasions. The club must decide whether to build around him or cash in while interest remains. Letting him go now, without exhausting all avenues, would feel like surrendering to the same instability that’s defined the club post-Ferguson. A loan? Maybe. A sale? Not yet.
