Manchester United’s summer is beginning to take shape, not with one isolated pursuit, but with the sense of a club trying to rebuild whole sections of its squad at once.
According to the Daily Mail, United are discussing a double move for West Ham pair Mateus Fernandes and Crysencio Summerville, with the Hammers seeking up to £140million for the two players.
United have reportedly made Fernandes a priority target, having shifted focus from Manchester City linked Elliot Anderson. The 21-year-old was left out of Portugal’s World Cup squad, but his reputation remains strong across Europe.

Daily Mail Sport report that United have moved ahead of Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid in the race, with discussions already held with the player’s camp. No formal bid has been made, but personal terms are not expected to be an issue.
That feels significant. United need midfield clarity, especially with Manuel Ugarte expected to depart and Casemiro also potentially leaving Old Trafford.
Summerville’s profile has risen further after his excellent World Cup opener for the Netherlands against Japan, where he scored a superb goal and produced a lively performance from the right.
The 24-year-old managed five goals and two assists in the Premier League last season after joining West Ham from Leeds for £25million.
West Ham now want a sizeable profit, and that is where this deal becomes complicated. United admire the player, but £140million for the pair feels more like an opening position than a realistic final figure.
United have already spent £39million on Ederson from Atalanta, but another midfielder remains on the agenda. The Daily Mail previously revealed that United were looking at three midfield additions across the £80million, £40million and £20million brackets.
Sander Berge is also back on the radar, suggesting United are exploring different price points rather than committing blindly to one route.
Away from West Ham, Marcus Rashford’s future remains unresolved after Barcelona failed to trigger their £26million option by June 15.
Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs and Aston Villa have all been credited with interest, leaving United with another financial and squad planning question to answer.
For now, Fernandes and Summerville represent ambition. The issue, as ever, is whether United can turn interest into value.
From a Manchester United fan’s perspective, this feels like exactly the sort of story that creates excitement and anxiety in equal measure.
Fernandes makes sense. United have needed a younger, more dynamic midfield profile for years, someone who can carry the ball, receive under pressure and grow into the side rather than arrive as another expensive short term fix.
Summerville is intriguing too. His pace, directness and confidence would add something different, especially if Rashford leaves and United need more threat from wide areas. His World Cup goal will only sharpen attention, but that is also the danger. Clubs can end up paying for tournament momentum rather than long term evidence.
The £140million figure is the problem. United cannot keep operating as though every rebuild requires paying the highest possible price. West Ham are entitled to ask for huge money, particularly after a difficult season, but United must be disciplined.
Supporters will want ambition, but they will also want intelligence. Fernandes and Summerville would improve the squad, but only at the right price. After so many expensive mistakes, that distinction matters more than ever.
