De Ligt’s recovery needs managing carefully, Martínez’s fitness record has become a concern, and Maguire’s contract situation adds uncertainty.

But there is also a strong argument that United should be brave with what they already have. Yoro is a serious talent and Heaven looks like someone the club should trust in the right moments. If Anton arrives for £34m, he has to play, and if he plays, someone else loses meaningful development time.

The age profile matters too. At 30, Anton would be coming in as a short-to-medium-term solution. That can work brilliantly if he settles fast and leads well, but it also means United must be sure this is a genuine need rather than a market reaction to a few injuries.

As a supporter, the bigger concern is whether money would be better spent elsewhere. The squad still feels like it needs more thrust in wide areas and greater balance overall. If the budget stretches comfortably, fine, add proven depth. If it does not, centre-back feels lower on the list. Anton sounds reliable, experienced and competitive, but this only makes full sense if United view him as a major contributor rather than expensive insurance.
