Manchester United have made exploratory contact over a potential move for Sporting CP defender Maxi Araujo, according to reporting from A Bola, as INEOS continue shaping plans for another significant summer rebuild at Old Trafford.
The Uruguay international has emerged as one of Sporting’s most consistent performers and is attracting growing attention across Europe. Atletico Madrid are described as being “committed” to signing the 26-year-old, while Tottenham, Chelsea and Juventus are also monitoring developments closely.

United’s interest appears genuine. Recruitment staff are actively assessing options at left-back and Araujo fits several criteria the club are prioritising, athleticism, attacking output and tactical flexibility.
Sporting are expected to demand the player’s €80million (£69million) release clause initially, although reports elsewhere in Portugal suggest a compromise fee closer to €50million (£43million) could eventually become realistic.
Manchester United’s need for reinforcements in that position has become increasingly obvious. Luke Shaw’s persistent injury concerns continue to leave the squad short of balance, while Tyrell Malacia’s time at Old Trafford has not developed as anticipated.

The report describes Malacia as Erik ten Hag’s “failed first signing” at United, a harsh but difficult assessment to dispute given his limited impact. Injuries disrupted his progress heavily and with his contract expiring in June, the expectation is that he will leave on a free transfer.
Patrick Dorgu is viewed internally as a player capable of operating higher up the pitch, meaning United are searching for a specialist option who can both compete with and support Shaw.
Araujo’s profile makes sense in that context. This season he has recorded seven goals and four assists across 44 appearances, strong numbers for a player operating predominantly from defensive areas.
An interesting element within the report concerns Ruben Amorim’s role in identifying the player previously. Before departing Sporting, Amorim reportedly recommended Araujo to Manchester United decision makers.

That existing knowledge could strengthen United’s position in negotiations. Sporting have consistently developed players capable of adapting quickly to elite football, with Bruno Fernandes remaining perhaps the clearest example from a United perspective.
Supporters will naturally hope Araujo follows a similar trajectory rather than repeating Manuel Ugarte’s inconsistent adaptation since leaving Portugal.
Competition, however, is fierce. Atletico Madrid’s admiration is longstanding and Diego Simeone is said to view the defender as a “personal target”. Chelsea and Tottenham are also pushing to assess whether a pre-World Cup agreement can be reached before his value potentially rises further on the international stage.
United have explored multiple left-back profiles in recent months, including Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly, Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde and Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall. Those deals, though, would appear difficult both financially and strategically.
Araujo therefore represents a more attainable solution. He combines experience, attacking threat and European pedigree while still retaining room for development.
INEOS are attempting to build a younger, more adaptable squad and this pursuit aligns with that wider strategy. Whether United can outmanoeuvre rivals remains uncertain, but their involvement in the race appears serious.
Manchester United supporters will probably see this link as another sign the club are finally addressing obvious weaknesses rather than simply chasing glamorous names. Left-back has been a recurring issue for years because Shaw’s fitness record remains unreliable and Malacia never established himself consistently.
Araujo’s numbers would immediately catch attention among fans. Seven goals and four assists from defensive positions suggest he offers far more attacking output than United currently receive from that flank. Supporters have watched too many stagnant performances where width and energy disappeared entirely.
There would still be concerns over the reported £69million valuation. Many fans would argue United cannot afford another expensive gamble, particularly after mixed recruitment over recent seasons. If Sporting eventually negotiate closer to the reported £43million figure, that would feel significantly more reasonable.
The Amorim connection may also reassure supporters. United fans increasingly want recruitment shaped by football intelligence and familiarity, not commercial appeal. If Amorim genuinely pushed the club towards Araujo previously, many would trust that recommendation carries weight.
