Manchester United appear to have taken a significant step in their pursuit of Mateus Fernandes, with The Times reporting that the club are “increasingly confident” of signing the West Ham United midfielder in a deal worth up to £80million.
It is a story with several moving parts. Arsenal have been tracking Fernandes closely, Real Madrid have entered the conversation at the request of José Mourinho, and West Ham’s relegation to the Championship has changed the landscape completely. For United, though, the opportunity is clear.
Fernandes, still only 21, arrived at West Ham from Southampton last summer for an initial £38million. According to The Times, Southampton also retained a 15 per cent sell-on clause, which adds another layer to West Ham’s valuation.
The report states that “United have stolen a march on Arsenal”, largely because Arsenal are unwilling to meet West Ham’s asking price. That detail feels important. Manchester United, under Michael Carrick, are clearly prepared to pay for a midfielder they believe can become a long-term pillar.

Fernandes scored five goals and provided four assists in 38 West Ham appearances last season. Those numbers do not tell the full story, but they do hint at a midfielder with end product, energy and Premier League experience.
For a United side looking to improve control, athleticism and ball progression, Fernandes offers a blend of qualities that could appeal to Carrick. He is not arriving as a finished article, but that may be part of the attraction. At his age, the upside is obvious.
The Times notes that “West Ham have little choice but to sell Fernandes after being relegated to the Championship.” That is the line which defines this transfer race.
West Ham may still push for maximum value, particularly with Arsenal and Real Madrid interested, but relegation weakens their hand. Keeping a player of Fernandes’ profile outside the Premier League would be difficult, especially when elite clubs are circling.
There is also uncertainty over whether West Ham need to sell this month to comply with Premier League rules. That could affect timing, structure and leverage, but the direction of travel appears clear. Fernandes is expected to leave this summer.
Arsenal’s interest should not be dismissed. They have been “actively pursuing Fernandes in recent weeks”, according to the report, but their reluctance to meet West Ham’s valuation has opened the door for United.
Real Madrid’s presence makes this more intriguing. Mourinho’s request for the Spanish club to try to sign Fernandes gives the player a glamorous alternative, but United can offer Premier League continuity, a central role and a project that may suit his development.
For Manchester United, this is exactly the sort of race they need to win. Not just because Fernandes is talented, but because beating Arsenal and Real Madrid to a player of this profile would carry symbolic weight.
From a Manchester United perspective, this is exactly the sort of transfer that gets the blood pumping.
Mateus Fernandes feels like a proper Carrick midfielder. He has legs, quality, Premier League experience and enough end product to suggest he can grow into a major player. Five goals and four assists from midfield in a struggling West Ham side is not something to ignore.
The £80million figure will naturally divide opinion, because United fans have seen big money spent badly before. But this feels different if the scouting conviction is strong. Fernandes is young, hungry and already battle-tested in English football. That matters.
There is also a lovely edge to this one. Arsenal wanted him. Real Madrid are now sniffing around because Mourinho likes him. If United win that race, it sends a message. This cannot be another summer of hesitation and panic. It has to be decisive.
United need midfielders who can run, pass, press and carry responsibility. Fernandes looks like someone who could grow with the team rather than simply plug a gap. If Carrick sees him as a key piece, then United should back the manager and get it done.
