Kante is a brilliant footballer, and nobody with any sense would question what he has achieved, but Spurs have spent years making messy squad decisions and then wondering why the team lacks balance.

If the club has already signed Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, why are we now being pointed towards a 35-year-old as the answer? If this is about leadership, then the bigger issue is why Tottenham keep finding themselves short of reliable senior figures in the first place. If it is about midfield steel, supporters could fairly ask why that profile was not a priority much earlier.

There is also the fear that this would be another short-term fix dressed up as ambition. Kante, at his best, improves almost any side. But Spurs need durability, planning and players who can carry the team forward for several seasons. They do not need another headline that looks stronger than the actual strategy behind it.

So yes, it is a compelling rumour. It is also one that many Tottenham fans would greet with raised eyebrows. Admiration for the player is one thing. Confidence that Spurs would execute a move like this properly is something else entirely.
