Galatasaray are preparing a transfer strategy that feels more like a statement of intent than a routine summer rebuild. According to reports from Turkish outlet Aspor, the Istanbul giants are targeting none other than Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk from Liverpool FC in what would be one of the most audacious moves in recent European football.
The original report states that Galatasaray are “preparing to make attempts at the end of the season” for both players, signalling a long-term plan rather than a speculative enquiry. It underlines the club’s ambition to remain competitive domestically while building a squad capable of making an impression in the Champions League.
This is not simply about adding star power. It is about redefining the club’s ceiling. Salah’s attacking productivity and van Dijk’s defensive authority represent elite-level qualities rarely seen outside Europe’s top five leagues. For Galatasaray, landing even one would be transformative; pursuing both suggests a club thinking well beyond its traditional constraints.

To navigate the financial realities of such a move, Galatasaray are reportedly exploring a swap mechanism. The Aspor report notes that “the management is considering a swap formula to reduce transfer costs”, with Roland Sallai emerging as the key bargaining chip.
Sallai, a versatile Hungarian international, has featured across multiple attacking roles this season. While his statistical output — one goal and six assists in 38 appearances — does not immediately leap off the page, his tactical flexibility and work rate have made him a dependable squad option.
There is also a narrative angle. Should Sallai move to Liverpool, he would join compatriots Dominik Szoboszlai and Milos Kerkez, forming a notable Hungarian contingent at Anfield. That familiarity could ease adaptation, although the leap in expectation would be significant.
From Galatasaray’s perspective, including Sallai in negotiations is a pragmatic decision. His current market valuation, reported at around €12 million, would only offset a fraction of the fee required for players of Salah and van Dijk’s calibre. However, in modern transfer structures, player exchanges often serve as catalysts rather than complete solutions.
The potential arrival of Salah would immediately recalibrate Galatasaray’s attacking dynamics. Few players in world football combine goal output, creativity, and transitional threat as effectively. His presence would not only elevate performance levels but also alter how opponents approach matches, forcing deeper defensive blocks and creating space for others.
Van Dijk, meanwhile, remains one of the most commanding centre-backs of his generation. His leadership, aerial dominance, and positional intelligence would bring stability to any defensive line. For a side aiming to compete in Europe, such qualities are invaluable.
The Aspor report frames the ambition succinctly, noting Galatasaray’s desire to build “a squad capable of competing in the Champions League”. In that context, targeting players of this profile is entirely logical, even if execution remains uncertain.
Ambition, however, does not guarantee feasibility. Liverpool’s valuation of Salah and van Dijk would be substantial, even considering contract timelines or age-related factors. Both players are central figures, not peripheral assets.
Moreover, the competitive landscape must be considered. Clubs across Europe and the Middle East would likely enter the frame should either player become available. Galatasaray’s proposal would need to be compelling not only financially but also in terms of sporting project.
Still, football history is punctuated by moves that initially seemed improbable. Galatasaray themselves have a track record of attracting high-profile talent, particularly when offering a clear role and passionate environment.
What makes this situation intriguing is the convergence of ambition and creativity. By exploring a swap deal and targeting two elite players simultaneously, Galatasaray are signalling that they intend to operate at a different level.
Whether this evolves into a genuine transfer saga or remains an ambitious blueprint will depend on negotiations in the coming months. For now, it stands as one of the most compelling stories ahead of the summer window.
