AC Milan’s 2024-25 season has felt like one bad month after another, and the team are almost certain to fall short of the minimum objectives.
Given that Milan currently sit ninth in the table, with a big gap to the European places having opened up, they are at risk of having completely free midweeks next season. The last resort is the Coppa Italia, which – if the Rossoneri win it – would bring a Europa League place.
It has been a failure of a campaign from many points of view, starting with the objectives that have not been hit. The Scudetto pursuit never really got going at all, and the European journey ended earlier than planned too.
According to the newspaper La Repubblica (via MilanPress), in the so-called ‘projections’ made at the beginning of the year (minimum objectives based on financial priorities), the management had deemed third place in Serie A to be sufficient.
Milan are obviously a long way away from that, so there will be a cross put in that box. However, the ownership and management expected elimination from the Champions League in the play-off round, which did happen. The fact it came against Feyenoord, though, cannot be satisfactory.
The targets laid out are what is required to guarantee sufficient revenues for the sustainability of the club. Without any Champions League or potentially even Europa League football next season, a gaping hole in the accounts will open up.
