The deal that brought Kostas Tsimikas to Roma hides an interesting piece of transfer background information.
Before Liverpool opened the door to a free transfer for the Greek full-back, sporting director Frederic Massara had been actively working on a surprise return: that of Mario Rui.

According to TMW, the Portuguese—released after terminating his contract with Napoli last December—had been identified as Tsimikas’s first alternative.
The deal was on the verge of being finalized, with the former Roma player ready to return to Roma after his stint in the 2016-17 season.
