Tajon Buchanan is in Inter Milan’s squad for the Champions League as a strategic decision by coach Simone Inzaghi.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, report that Inzaghi believes he has sufficient cover in defense, but wants Buchanan available on the flanks when he is back.

Wingback Buchanan was a bit of a surprise name on Inter’s squad list for the Champions League.

There was certainly no surprise that forward Joaquin Correa was not on the list. The Argentine is firmly out of favour despite technically being on Inter’s books.

And defender Tomas Palacios only just joined the Nerazzurri. At the age of 21, he will have to settle in and adjust, and there are doubts regarding what role he could play in his first months at the club.

But this left room for Buchanan to be included.

That is in spite of the fact that the Canadian is still on the sidelines for the foreseeable future.

Buchanan suffered a broken leg in training with his national team at the Copa America.

Why Tajon Buchanan Is In Inter Champions League Squad

There is no doubt that Buchanan will miss Inter’s first few Champions League matches.

The Nerazzurri begin their European campaign away to Manchester City later this month.

But according to Tuttosport, Buchanan may only miss three of Inter’s eight matches in the “league phase” of the competition.

And then, the 25-year-old is likely to be available for Inter’s fourth match. That comes against Arsenal at the start of November.

Inzaghi wants Buchanan as an option for the five matches in the competition from November onwards.

Meanwhile, the coach feels that having Palacios available will be unnecessary for now.

The Nerazzurri coach feels that there is sufficient depth in defense with versatile players like Carlos Augusto and Matteo Darmian able to play in the back three.
