Samuele Ricci could be on his way out of Milan just a year after arriving, with the midfielder not considered a natural fit for Ruben Amorim’s system.

According to Matteo Moretto, MilanNews24, and Calciomercato.com, Ricci does not figure among Amorim’s tactical priorities, with the Portuguese coach favouring a different profile of player for his two-man midfield.

It is not a question of form, the former Torino talent enjoyed a solid debut campaign of 31 appearances, a goal and four assists despite sitting behind Adrien Rabiot and Luka Modric in the pecking order, but rather one of style, and Milan are weighing a permanent sale to raise funds and reinvest.

Ricci offered to Juventus and Atalanta amid midfield squeeze

The player’s representatives have already moved to test the market, with recent contacts reported with both Juventus and Atalanta.

The Bianconeri, whom Giovanni Carnevali and Frederic Massara are building with a more Italian core, have long admired Ricci, his name surfaced in a possible swap for Federico Gatti in the winter window.

At Atalanta, meanwhile, he would have a powerful backer in Maurizio Sarri, who repeatedly sought the midfielder during his time at Lazio.

The logic is partly one of numbers. Amorim wants to avoid overcrowding in the middle, where Milan currently have seven players for two roles, too many even with a return to European football via the Europa League next season.

Signed for €23 million last summer and under contract until 2029, Ricci will not be sold cheaply: Milan want offers starting at around €20 million before they open talks.

Ricci, for his part, is said to be working seriously through pre-season with the clear aim of changing Amorim’s mind. Whether he can force his way into the coach’s plans, or becomes the next piece of Milan’s sell-to-build summer, is a question the coming weeks will answer.
