It has become apparent that the club will look to reinforce their options in the middle of the park during the next transfer period.

Liverpool may be well-stocked in the department at the moment. However, the reality is that they are still probably one player short.

And this will be compounded even further by the likely departure of Wataru Endo in the summer.

Meanwhile, Curtis Jones, who was close to joining Inter Milan, could also be on the move. Alexis Mac Allister is the subject of interest from Real Madrid and could leave if the right offer arrives.

It's why Liverpool are going to be looking to sign at least two central midfielders in the summer, and one player who will likely be a key target could be an exciting midfielder many may not have even heard of yet.

Anfield Watch understands that Liverpool scouts have been really impressed by Ghanaian international Caleb Yirenkyi after heavily scouting him for the last year or so.

The midfielder, who turned 20-years-old last month, has been putting in impressive performances for both club and country while playing in a number of different roles in midfield and even as a right-back.

It is understood that during the final days of the January window, Liverpool even made an attempt to sign Yirenkyi from Nordsjaelland, but this was rejected by the Danish Superliga side, even though the Ghanaian would have been open to the move.

Ultimately, the move had come too late on in the window for Liverpool to get the deal over the line. However, the Reds have not given up on their pursuit of Yirenkyi.

If anything, it seems like Richard Hughes is ramping up the club's efforts in trying to sign him.

Anfield Watch understands that Liverpool have requested scouts to attend every single Nordsjaelland game from now until the rest of the season, predominantly to keep an eye on Yirenkyi.

There is an unwritten understanding that Nordsjaelland will be willing to sell Yirenkyi in the summer. The club has always operated in this way, and never stand in the way of their talents making the step-up to a higher level.

In order to part ways with Yirenkyi, Nordjaelland will be looking for a club record fee, which would be in excess of €20m.

Liverpool are expected to be in the running to sign Yirenkyi. The club is clearly serious about the player, otherwise they would not have requested the presence of scouts at every single one of his games.

However, there are a lot of other clubs interested in the midfielder. Manchester United, Brighton, Chelsea and Arsenal have all been credited with interest in the past. Top teams in the Bundesliga like RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund are also in the race for his signature.

It's understood the player has a close relationship with former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien, who is an assistant coach at Nordsjaelland and who closely advises his fellow compatriot.
