River Plate ‘to enquire’ about Nicolás Otamendi | OneFootball

O Jogo reports that River Plate intend to enquire about Nicolás Otamendi’s availability, with the Argentine club still pursuing the Benfica captain.

The club believe they can convince him to return to Argentina 16 years after he left for Europe, and the enquiry is designed to test his openness to the move.

Otamendi is in the final stages of his Benfica contract and has preferred to remain in Europe to be in the best condition for the national team.

River’s hopes have grown since the 38-year-old said he will step away from the national team after the 2026 World Cup, which could influence any renewal with Benfica.

This season he has made 43 appearances for Benfica, 24 in Liga Portugal Betclic, 14 in the Champions League, two in the Taça de Portugal, two in the Taça da Liga and one in the Supertaça.

Across 3,809 minutes he has scored three goals, and he is valued at 1 million euros.
