Rob Edwards says Matt Doherty was omitted from Wolves’ squad because of an ongoing knee problem, with a collective call taken not to risk him against Fulham.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the experienced defender was already sidelined when Edwards arrived in November and has been managing the issue since. Out of contract in the summer, today’s meeting with Fulham might have been his final chance to feature at Molineux.

Edwards declined to discuss Doherty’s future. He said the priority is to let the knee settle over the next couple of weeks, noting the player has been carrying the problem for a long time.

The head coach made four changes for the Fulham clash, including a recall for Jose Sa after the goalkeeper recovered from an ankle injury.

Edwards described Sa as important, saying the plan had been to have him available for these two games and that staff had worked with him to make that possible.

He added that the aim is simply to try to win the game, and that selection choices reflect what the staff believe gives Wolves the best chance.
