According to L'Équipe, Roberto De Zerbi took the Tottenham job on Tuesday, fewer than two months after leaving Marseille. His move prompts a review of how OM coaches under owner Frank McCourt, in place since October 2016, have fared since departing.
Rudi Garcia left in 2019, then reached a Champions League semi-final with Lyon in 2020. He coached Al Nassr in 2022, joined Napoli in 2024 before a November exit, and has led Belgium since January 2025 with seven wins in 11 and 29 goals in eight World Cup qualifiers, the second best attack in Europe.
André Villas-Boas finished second in 2020 to return OM to the Champions League after six years, then left in March 2021 with the team sixth. He has not coached since, serving for nearly two years as Porto president. Jean-Louis Gasset died on 26 December 2025 aged 72.
Jorge Sampaoli arrived in March 2021 and left in July 2022 as runners-up. He then had short spells at Sevilla, Flamengo and Rennes, leaving after six defeats in eight, before a brief return to Atlético Mineiro from September 2025 to January 2026. He has been out of work since February.
Igor Tudor coached OM in 2022-23, including a 2-1 Coupe de France last 16 win over PSG, then resigned at Lazio after 11 games in 2024 and spent eight months at Juventus. A short rescue stint at Tottenham ended after 43 days with one win in seven. Marcelino left OM in September 2023 and has since kept Villarreal third on 58 points behind Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Gennaro Gattuso left after five months with 1.31 points per Ligue 1 game, led Hajduk Split to third in 2024-2025, and now coaches Italy, aiming to reach 2026 via the play-offs. Interims Nasser Larguet, nine games in early 2021 and now Saudi Arabia’s technical director, and Jacques Abardonado, three matches in 2023 then again in 2026, also contributed, with Abardonado on Habib Beye’s staff.
