Olympique Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi is under mounting pressure and reportedly faces the prospect of dismissal, according to RMC Sport.
The Italian’s job hangs by a thread after his side’s humiliating 3-0 defeat to Club Brugge on Wednesday, which capped a disappointing European campaign.
Marseille entered their final League Phase clash poised to advance to the play-offs, but a shambolic display in Belgium saw them squander their fate-in-own-hands opportunity.
Nonetheless, Les Phocéens appeared set to scrape through until Benfica’s late goal against Real Madrid pushed the Portuguese side above Marseille into 24th place.
Marseille became the first French club to be eliminated at this stage of the Champions League since the revamped format was introduced.
Despite sitting third in Ligue 1 and on track for a Champions League return next season, the club’s hierarchy are now weighing up a managerial change.
If Marseille part ways with De Zerbi, the 46-year-old is expected to be among the most sought-after coaches on the market, having previously attracted interest from Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Liverpool.
Three of those four clubs could be searching for new managers this summer, making De Zerbi a likely candidate should he become available.
Whether De Zerbi will still be in charge for this weekend’s clash with Paris FC remains to be seen, but Marseille will be desperate for three points with a resurgent Lyon side closing in.
