Roberto De Zerbi has received a potential boost before his first match at Sunderland on Sunday, with Mathys Tel back in training. The new Spurs head coach has also pledged to remain in charge next season, irrespective of the relegation fight.

According to Sunderland Echo, Tel was an early doubt after being hurt in the defeat to Nottingham Forest before the break and then withdrawing from France Under-21 duty. He appeared in club footage from De Zerbi’s opening session, as did Conor Gallagher, Lucas Bergvall and Joao Palhinha after recent injuries.

In his first interview he said he has signed a five-year deal and would lead Tottenham next season regardless of what happens over the final seven games. He stressed a game-by-game focus and accepted limited training time may require pragmatism while still reflecting the club’s possession identity and a desire to defend and attack with all 11 players.

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is a major doubt after hernia surgery. Pape Sarr is a fresh concern with a shoulder problem picked up with Senegal, while Mohammed Kudus and Rodrigo Bentancur could be in contention at the Stadium of Light after beginning individual work before the break.

Ben Davies and Yves Bissouma are pushing to return this month. James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski are aiming to be back before the end of the campaign. Wilson Odobert remains a long-term absentee with an ACL injury.
