Roberto Martinez has left his role as Portugal head coach after their 1-0 World Cup last-16 defeat by Spain in Arlington on Monday.

According to L'Équipe, he confirmed his departure in the post-match press conference, noting his contract expires on Monday and describing it as the end of a cycle.

He said he had come to win the World Cup and did not see himself continuing after such a premature exit.

He has been linked with Al-Nassr, Cristiano Ronaldo's Saudi club.

Martinez took charge in 2022. His Portugal side went out of the Euro in the quarter-finals to France, but won the Nations League last year.
