AS Roma star Matias Soule is ready to switch allegiance to the Italian national team if Argentina continue to overlook him, according to his agent Martin Guastadisegno (h/t LaRoma24).
Soule has risen to prominence as one of Serie A’s best young talents, yet he hasn’t caught the attention of Argentine head coach Lionel Scaloni.
The 22-year-old, who holds dual citizenship, was courted by then-Italy head coach Luciano Spalletti last summer, but he declined the opportunity in the hope of representing his homeland.
With his future with La Albiceleste looking bleak, Soule is now considering making a switch to the Azzurri to fulfil his dream of playing in the World Cup.
The former Juventus youth product burst onto the scene with his impressive loan spell at Frosinone in the 2023/24 season, which helped him earn a move to Roma last year in a deal worth €25 million.
Soule racked up five goals and five assists in all competitions in his debut season, helping Roma secure a place in the Europa League.
He has started the 2025/26 season sharply by netting three goals and two assists in six games, laying the foundations for a highly productive campaign.
Soule scored a belter of a goal and set up Bryan Cristante’s header from a corner kick in the comeback win against Fiorentina over the weekend.
His absence from the Argentina squad could be down to the presence of Nico Paz, Franco Mastantuno and Giuliano Simeone, who are currently the preferred options for Argentina.
With Lionel Messi also looking to play in the World Cup next year, Soule is unlikely to secure a place in the squad unless he continues his fine run of form.
