Alessio Romagnoli has rejoined Lazio training at Formello on Monday after his failed switch to Al-Sadd. The centre-back resumed work with team-mates following a botched move to Roberto Mancini’s side in Qatar.
Il Corriere dello Sport and Il Messaggero report he trained under Maurizio Sarri and add that Al-Sadd have promised to revisit a deal in the summer. It is unclear if Sarri will restore him to the starting line-up immediately or hold him back, with in-form Juventus next.
The 31-year-old had grown unhappy with president Claudio Lotito and believed he had been cleared to leave. He even said goodbye to travelling Lazio supporters at Via del Mare, before the club withdrew him from the market the following day.
After a week of twists, last-minute talks produced an agreement between the clubs just before Qatar’s deadline. The move collapsed when Romagnoli refused to waive his Lazio salary for the final three months.
Having skipped training last week, he is available again but his relationship with Lotito appears badly damaged. Agent Enzo Raiola has accused the club of asking Romagnoli to forgo three months’ wages, criticised their methods, claimed players were still owed three or four salaries in January and said there was never a renewal offer as the defender realised his future lay away from Lazio.
