Alessio Romagnoli’s proposed switch to Al-Sadd could collapse under new foreign-player rules, with a decision expected within 48-72 hours, Il Corriere dello Sport reports.

The 31-year-old was close to joining the Qatari champions in January, but the deal fell apart at the last minute, reportedly after Claudio Lotito asked him to forgo three months’ salary.

Al-Sadd returned in the summer and agreed a €3 million fee with Lazio. With personal terms finalised, Romagnoli then had to wait for a new head coach following Roberto Mancini’s departure.

The Euro 2020 winner was replaced by Razvan Lucescu earlier this month, and the death of the former Emir of Qatar caused further delay.

The Qatar Stars League now limits clubs to fielding no more than five foreign players at once and also caps the number they can register.

Romagnoli has already said goodbye to Lazio fans in a video played during an anti-Lotito march this month. He had also saluted them after the Lecce match in January, believing it was his last outing before remaining at Formello for the next five months.
