Mircea Lucescu is confident that Inter Milan can return to being the protagonists in Serie A despite an underwhelming start to the season.

Speaking to TMW via FCInterNews, Romania’s head coach warned the Italian top flight of Inter’s potential comeback.

New manager Cristian Chivu has endured a faltering start to his tenure at San Siro.

Indeed, last season’s runners-up picked up only two wins in the opening four rounds.

More importantly, they dropped all six points in the other two matches, slumping to dismal defeats to Juventus and Udinese.

However, a hard-earned 2-1 home triumph over Sassuolo on Monday helped the ex-defender steady the ship.

Furthermore, Inter cruised to a 2-0 win at Ajax in their Champions League opener.

Therefore, they’ve won back-to-back matches for the first time under Chivu.

Anything less than another victory against Cagliari this weekend would be an upset of epic proportions.

Meanwhile, reigning champions Napoli have gone from strength to strength, winning all four league games.

As a result, they already boast a six-point lead over Inter.

Yet, Lucescu believes Chivu’s charges have what it takes to return in contention for the Scudetto.

“It will be a title race fought until the end,” Lucescu said. “A lot will depend on the European campaigns, which require a huge expenditure of energy.

“Those who manage it best and rotate their squad effectively will benefit.

“Inter have a large squad with highly skilled and experienced players. They didn’t start well, but over time, they can recover strongly.”

Then, Lucescu hailed Chivu’s understanding of the game.

“I like him. He will have a great season,” he added. “He’s an intelligent guy. Plus, he knows the Inter environment. Seven years at the club mean a lot.

“He doesn’t have anyone working against him, which is never guaranteed when you arrive somewhere new.”
