Manchester United’s summer signing, Manuel Ugarte, has encountered some challenges early in the 2024-25 season. United signed Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain for a reported €50 million, with an additional €10 million in potential add-ons and a 10 percent sell-on clause.
Although Ugarte was brought to Old Trafford by manager Erik ten Hag, the task of unlocking his full potential now falls to the club’s new boss, Rúben Amorim.
Ugarte enjoyed a successful spell under Amorim at Sporting CP from 2021 to 2023, which helped secure his move to PSG. Amorim, however, believes Ugarte’s time in Paris was ultimately beneficial.

While speaking ahead of the Red Devils’ FA Cup match against Arsenal on Sunday, Amorim stated that he sees a different Ugarte than what he had with Sporting and notes that it was due to his one season at PSG.
“I think he is better with the ball, playing between the lines,” Amorim said. “He continues to be an aggressive player, but I think he has improved in some ways because he trained with some of the players at PSG, when you train with different players, you have a different confidence, in training you have different problems and you improve”
Meanwhile, Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News reported recently that former PSG striker Edinson Cavani prepared Ugarte for what to expect at Manchester United. The two, who were roommates during Uruguay’s international duty, often discussed the club.
