Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim has shed light on Kobbie Mainoo’s ongoing struggle for game time at Old Trafford, admitting that the young midfielder faces an uphill battle for a starting spot due to the presence of captain Bruno Fernandes.
The young Man United midfielder is struggling for playing time at Old Trafford and his progress has stalled since breaking into the first team squad.
Club legends like Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt have criticised the United management for not giving enough chances to Mainoo.
Speaking candidly about the situation, Amorim said, as reported by Fabrizio Romano:
“Kobbie Mainoo plays in the same position as Bruno Fernandes, and it’s difficult to take him off the team.”
It’s the first time the Portuguese coach has directly addressed Mainoo’s lack of minutes this season, an issue that has become a growing talking point among fans and pundits.
Mainoo remains one of the brightest prospects to emerge from United’s academy in recent years.
However, under Amorim, his role has diminished significantly. Bruno Fernandes continues to be the heartbeat of United’s midfield, leading by example, creating chances, and scoring crucial goals.
Amorim’s tactical setup, which prioritises a single advanced playmaker behind two more disciplined midfielders, has made it hard for both to coexist in the same lineup.

Since arriving at Old Trafford, Amorim has implemented a 3-4-2-1 system that emphasizes fluid pressing and quick vertical transitions. In this structure, Fernandes operates as the central creative force, linking midfield to attack.
Mainoo, despite his technical intelligence and composure, is seen as a player still refining his positional discipline, a key demand in Amorim’s setup.
That balance has been tricky for Amorim to maintain amid a turbulent season. United’s form has fluctuated, and pressure continues to mount for results, leaving little room for experimentation with younger players.
