Ruben Amorim has reminded Manchester United fans how quickly "everything can change" after watching Liverpool draw level with the club’s English record number of league title.

Liverpool's Premier League triumph this season is their 20th overall, equalling United's own leading tally. The Red Devils won that landmark title more than a decade ago in 2012/13 and haven't put together a meaningful challenge since, while morale among supporters is low given that this season has been the worst in the Premier League era – and could potentially be a new low since 1974.

With United keen to restore the glory days - a project to be crowned England's football champions for a 21st time by 2028 is said to be underway - Amorim has reassured fans.

"The first thing is to focus on ourselves, not on the other teams. The next thing is to be really honest. [United and Liverpool] are in different levels in this moment. But everything can change. When I started [watching] the Premier League, it was the opposite, so everything can change."

Amorim was referring to United's longstanding dominance of the domestic scene throughout the 1990s and 2000s, at a time when Liverpool were in their own slump after dominating for two decades prior. The Merseysiders ended a 30-year league title drought as recently as 2019/20, having finished eighth four seasons earlier, and a distance fourth in 2017/18.

Leicester City's 2015/16 triumph shows that even what feels like the impossible is still possible. Chelsea also went from tenth to first in 12 months from 2015/16 to 2016/17 when Antonio Conte revolutionised the squad with a new tactical system similar to Amorim's at Old Trafford.

"We need to focus on step by step, not trying to think too far ahead," the United boss, who has previously said that four years is too many to build a title challenge, stressed.

"We have an ultimate goal, which is winning the Premier League. I'm not crazy, I know that is not going to be next year. We need to improve next year. But I know it is important for the fans. We know that but we need to be honest with them and work hard every day."
