Ruben Amorim has suggested Manchester United may not need to sign a striker this summer following the arrivals of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
United spent big on signing the two forwards, adding Cunha and Mbeumo for a combined fee of around £130m, including add-ons.
Amorim’s side struggled for goals last season, scoring just 44 times in 38 Premier League games – the fifth worst record in the division as they slumped to a 15th place Premier League finish.
And the United boss says Cunha and Mbeumo, who scored 15 and 20 league goals respectively during the last campaign, are also options to play as the central striker, and backed them to make a big difference.
“They can play as a striker,” Amorim said.
“We have Josh (Zirkzee), we have Rasmus. Our focus is to improve the connection between them.
“I don’t know if the position is there for them. They have to work. They have other players that are fighting for that position.
“But again, I’m really pleased. They (Cunha and Mbeumo) proved the qualities that they have. They are really humble, that is really important, and the best thing is that they chose to be here.
“They had other options, Champions League options, they read everything people say about our club at the moment but they chose to be here and that is a key point for me.”
United are keen to add more signings this summer but the Portuguese manager says he will be happy should he start the new campaign with his present squad.
“I think for our club, in this moment, we need to be really careful when we sign a player,” he said.
“If we have to start the season with this squad, I’m happy, because all the players that are here want to be here. That for me is the most important thing.
“With Bryan and Matheus, we are clearly a better team.”
However, after their big outlay on Mbeumo and Cunha, they may have to sell players in order to make more signings.
Marcus Rashford has already departed on loan to Barcelona, who have the option to sign him permanently too, while Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Tyrell Malacia and Jadon Sancho will be allowed to leave should a suitable offer arrive.
“Some players have to find a new place to make space in the team,” Amorim explained. “Other players clearly show that they want a new challenge and they want new teams.
“We are just allowing these players to have time to think and to decide. If we reach a point that they have to join the team, they will join the team because they are our players.
“I know for a fact that we, Omar (Berrada) and Jason (Wilcox) and the club, have a number for these players. If they don’t reach that, they will be Manchester United players. No doubts about that.
“I understand other clubs are maybe waiting for the last minute but they can have a surprise.
“I am ready to receive the players. I have more options and if they have to fight each other to play, for me that is perfect.”
