Rubén Sellés Sellés has been officially appointed as the new head coach of Sheffield United, following the departure of Chris Wilder.

The 42-year-old, formerly in charge at Hull City, was quickly named as Wilder’s replacement.

Wilder's exit, which had been widely anticipated after a board meeting last week, was confirmed on Wednesday evening, ending days of speculation. His departure comes on the back of United’s heartbreaking play-off final defeat to Sunderland.

The Blades had finished third in the Championship and saw off Bristol City in the semi-finals, but a late goal from Tommy Watson at Wembley saw Sunderland snatch a 2-1 win and promotion, leaving United empty-handed.

Sellés arrives with strong credentials, having been highly regarded by Reading fans for his efforts during one of the toughest periods in the club’s history. He guided the Royals to safety in League One despite points deductions and even had them fighting near the top for much of the following season before moving on to Hull City.

Although he managed to keep the Tigers up after taking over while they were bottom of the Championship, he was still dismissed by the club later in the campaign.

Sellés becomes only the second non-British manager to take charge of Sheffield United, following Slavisa Jokanovic.
