Ruben Selles oversaw just five league games at Sheffield United before being sacked
Ruben Selles is closing in on his next managerial job just one month after his Sheffield United disaster.
According to Spanish outlet El Periodico de Aragon, the Spaniard is set to be appointed to the second division side Real Zaragoza.
The 42-year-old was hired by the Blades during the summer, but he lasted just five league games in charge before being dismissed.
Selles oversaw five defeats in those five fixtures, which left the Yorkshire outfit bottom of the Championship table just a couple of months after they had reached the play-off final under Chris Wilder.
Wilder was brought back as his replacement, and the side have won two of their five matches since his return.
It has been reported that Real Zaragoza are planning the appointment of a new head coach after their own disastrous start to the season in the Segunda Division.
It’s believed that terms have been agreed with Selles and that all that’s left is for him to sign on the dotted line to confirm his arrival.
A 5-0 defeat at home to Cultural Leonesa last weekend saw the club’s hierarchy act quickly by making the decision to change manager.
Selles has emerged as the immediate front-runner, which will see him return to management just five weeks since his dismissal from Sheffield United.
Real Zaragoza are currently bottom of the Spanish second tier, with the team earning just six points from their opening 10 fixtures.
The team finished 18th in the previous campaign, and would’ve been hoping to improve on that position this year, which will now be Selles’ aim.
This will be the 42-year-old’s first position as a manager outside of England, having previously worked at Reading, Hull City and Southampton prior to his short-lived spell with Sheffield United, who are now 23rd in the Championship table under Wilder.
Selles has spent the last few years working in England to mixed results, but the disaster at Sheffield United means a move back to Spain might be for the best.
It’s difficult to see him rebuilding his reputation anywhere else, as his best work came in League One and it’s unclear if he’d be willing to take that step back down.
It’s clear that the move to Sheffield United wasn’t a good fit, and his time at Hull indicates he could work at a Championship level again, but no club will want to take that risk so soon after his time at Bramall Lane.
