Rudy Matondo, 17, delivered a standout display as Paris FC drew 1-1 at Lyon on Ligue 1’s 25th matchday, underlining why major European clubs have been tracking him.
According to L'Équipe, Paris FC paid €17.5m including bonuses to Auxerre in the final hours of the winter window, a fee many in recruitment did not consider excessive, though some felt it was slightly inflated by a so-called PFC tax linked to the Arnault family’s ownership.
Starting in a midfield three at Groupama Stadium, the Évry-Courcouronnes-born midfielder lasted 87 minutes before Vincent Marchetti replaced him as his final efforts took their toll. He harried Lyon relentlessly, pressed with bite, competed strongly in duels, and stayed available and composed under pressure in build-up.
He sparked Marshall Munetsi’s goal with a powerful strike that Dominik Greif parried into the Zimbabwean’s path. It was Munetsi’s third goal in a row.
Head coach Antoine Kombouaré stressed the collective, but said Matondo was among those who stood out alongside Nhoa Sangui and the central defenders, with Moustapha Mbow particularly dominant. He felt the teenager was close to perfect defensively and in how he moved the ball cleanly, and added that the staff expect him to reproduce such performances.
The Grigny-raised midfielder signed his first professional deal with Auxerre last summer, having debuted in Ligue 1 a few months earlier, and made 16 appearances in the first 20 rounds this season, including six starts, before moving to Paris. He turns 18 in four days and, after this showing, could see his minutes increase before the season ends, which was not necessarily the initial plan.
