Corinthians visit Peñarol at Campeón del Siglo tonight in the Libertadores group stage, a rural, stripped-back setting near Montevideo. Kick-off is 21:30 Brasília time in the fifth round.

According to Globo.com, the ground lies about 20 kilometres from central Montevideo in a rural zone. Access is limited, the surroundings are a long highway, trees, dirt roads and a swathe of woodland in front of the main entrance.

Opened a little over 10 years ago at a cost of 40 million dollars, Campeón del Siglo holds 40,000 and retains traditional South American terraces. Around 90% of sections have no seats, and the carboneros watch on their feet with banners, flags, smoke and balloons.

It is modern and well kept rather than luxurious, the intensity is driven by the Uruguayan support.

This will be only Corinthians’ second visit. In 2021, Vagner Mancini’s side lost 4-0 here in the Copa Sudamericana, a match played behind closed doors because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Tonight’s backdrop will be very different.

After Platense’s slip against Santa Fé, Peñarol need to beat the Timão to reach the final round still in contention for the last 16. About 30,000 tickets have been sold in advance.
