Simon Rusk affirms that West Ham, Fulham and Leicester are point-winning games but ignored Everton from that list despite Southampton defeating them twice this season.

From a redemption Championship season in 2023/24, Southampton has derailed a lot from winning ways. The numbers speak for themselves, as the Saints' wins have dropped from an impressive 30 last campaign to a meagre 6 this season.

But if that wasn't enough, the stretches between these hard-fought wins have gone on to the Saints fans' nerves. Yet there's a flip side to this story.

Given the club's rare victories this season, almost every Southampton fan exactly remembers the club's wins and the corresponding teams they defeated this season.

Well, enjoying such track keeping from their fanbase is a blessing for Southampton, but the club has failed to reciprocate similar efforts on their part.

Simon Rusk forgets Everton in discussion of winnable games left

Just look how recently, interim boss Simon Rusk seemed ignorant of Southampton's favourite opponents this season, Everton.

Notably, the Saints have defeated the Toffees' in both meetings this season, once in the Carabao Cup and later in the Premier League. Still, upon being quizzed about winnable games left, Rusk didn't take notice of Everton going under the radar in the question.

As quoted by the Daily Echo, in response to the club's winnable chances against Fulham, Leicester and upcoming West Ham, Rusk affirmed: "I can understand why big picture, everyone would look at blocks of games. What's important is we have to remain present."

Now, one may call this a slip-up from Rusk amidst the turbulent situation, but it feels an indication of what's to come ahead.

It's been mere days since Rusk expressed his defensively oriented Southampton plan, which views a clean sheet as an ideal club performance. But naturally, restricts the chances of a win.

So maybe, now that Rusk is certain to command charge of the rest of the season, the boss might prefer escaping humiliating defeats over wins. What follows as a sad speculation from this is the Saints fans be prepared to see the club's Everton streak broken soon.
