Russell Martin has been unveiled as Leicester City’s new manager on a three-year contract, dropping into League One after back-to-back relegations. According to Sainstmarching.com, the 40-year-old returns to England following a torrid stint at Rangers.
His appointment follows strong speculation he would succeed Gary Rowett. In his first remarks, he described Leicester as a club with great history.
Martin led Southampton to the Premier League in 2024, beating Leeds United in the Championship play-off final, Adam Armstrong scoring the winner. The following campaign unravelled, with only one win before he was dismissed in December as the Saints slid to the bottom amid rapid managerial churn.
The 2025/26 season brought fresh drama, ending in bleak fashion as Spygate emerged and wrecked promotion hopes despite a 21-game unbeaten run led by Tonda Eckert.
Leicester expect a swift reset, though it will not be straightforward. Foxes supporters had been left disheartened by the failed reigns of Steve Cooper, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Rowett.
Some will argue he was scarcely given time to impose himself at Ibrox, and he arguably suits the EFL better. He owns 86 wins across the Championship and League One, including 24 with Milton Keynes Dons in the third tier. If things go to plan, he could even face his former club in 2027/28.
