Senegal came from a goal down to claim a 3-1 victory over Sudan in the first 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) round of 16 clash at Grand Stade de Tanger on Saturday evening.

Ismaila Sarr was presented with an opportunity to equalise, but he fired his effort straight into Monged Elneel’s arms.

Edouard Mendy was alert to keep out Mohamed Eisa’s low drive in the 24th minute.

Pape Gueye restored parity for the Teranga Lions as he received a ball from Sadio Mane before unleashing an unstoppable strike beyond the goalkeeper’s reach.

Gueye gave Senegal the lead in the first half stoppage time with a first-time finish.

Abdallah forced Mendy to make a last-ditch save from a low shot after the break, marking a show of intent from Sudan.

Senegal created the first big chance of the second half, with Sarr heading the ball to Boulaye Dia. He missed from close range.

Paris Saint-Germain youngster Ibrahim Mbaye completed the scoring for the Teranga Lions, combining with Mane before picking out the bottom corner.

Mane has now recorded nine assists at AFCON, the most in the competition since 2006, surpassing former Ivory Coast midfielder Yaya Toure’s long-standing tally of seven.

Senegal will now face either Mali or Tunisia in the quarter-finals.
