Pressure on Santos president Marcelo Teixeira intensified as supporters staged protests ahead of Thursday’s meeting with Vasco. According to Globo.com, banners targeting the club’s hierarchy appeared over the past two days.

At Vila Belmiro on Monday night, one banner demanded immediate reinforcements or for those in charge to leave, and it was removed minutes later by club staff.

Another, placed at the entrance to a college, addressed Marcelo Teixeira by his initials and asked whether the transfer ban had been paid.

Santos are currently barred by FIFA from registering new players because of a debt of 2.56 million euros, R$ 15.3 million, owed to Arouca of Portugal for the signing of centre-back João Basso.

The club have been unable to register midfielder Christian Oliva, a recent acquisition who is yet to make his debut.

On the pitch, Santos were knocked out of the Paulistão on Sunday after a 2-1 defeat by Novorizontino in the quarter-finals.

They are winless in the Brasileirão with one point from three matches. On Thursday, they host Vasco at 19:00, Brasília time, at Vila Belmiro in round four of Série A.
