Santos Laguna finished as one of the worst performers during the 2025-26 season in Liga MX, but have wasted no time in preparing for the new campaign. Their next season plans developed while the current season semi-finals took centre stage last week.
Just how poor were Santos? Well, the Torreón side conceded 2.24 goals per match, finishing rock bottom of the Clausura table and 13 points off the postseason positions. Even an emphatic 3-0 win over Monterrey on their final game of the season two weeks ago couldn’t lift them off the table floor.
In addition to the poor performances on the pitch, Santos Laguna brought plenty of off-pitch drama. Grupo Orlegi, owners of Santos and fellow Liga MX club Atlas FC, declared their intention to sell the latter back in July 2025. After long discussions Grupo Orlegi announced that they reached an agreement with Grupo Prodi to sell Atlas FC for roughly $220 million.
The deal was agreed last month, but the official takeover won’t take place until July 1st. Meaning that Atlas is undergoing a transition period, before its new owners can officially get started in the summer.
And this week, Los Guerreros made an announcement which will surely raise some eyebrows.
As Grupo Orelgi’s control over Atlas is set to end, the owners decided that they wouldn’t leave empty-handed, opting to take a few assets with them on their way out.
The news broke recently that Santos Laguna signed Diego González and Eduardo Aguirre, both of whom played with Atlas.
No financial terms have been confirmed, and the decision appears to have been made solely by Grupo Orlegi. Atlas’s incoming owners are of course unable to make any decisions until they officially assume full control in July.
Los Rojinegros reached the Liga MX Clausura quarter-finals before being eliminated by Cruz Azul, with Diego González emerging as one of the side’s standout performers. Although his final ball and finishing could be inconsistent at times, the Paraguayan international’s direct style, technical quality and pace made him a constant threat and a difficult player to contain.
It’s unclear whether the club will decide to take even more players with them before officially handing over the keys to Grupo Prodi, but stripping a club of its most valuable players prior to selling it isn’t exactly the polite thing to do.
