Santos set to face former defender Jhonnathan at Chapecoense in Brasileirão opener | OneFootball

Santos will come up against former defender Jhonnathan when they play Chapecoense at Arena Condá on Wednesday 28 at 20:00 in the first round of the Brasileirão.

According to Diario Do Peixe, Santos allowed him to join Chapecoense on a free transfer, retaining 30% of his economic rights. He had initially moved on loan in April 2024 after limited minutes, and the switch was made permanent at season’s end.

The left-footed centre-back began 2024 at Água Santa for the Paulistão. Since arriving in Santa Catarina he has made 20 appearances and scored one goal.

A Santos academy product, he started as the club finished runners-up in the 2022 Copa São Paulo. He featured five times for the first team in 2021 under Ariel Holan, having previously played for the now-disbanded under-23s.

In 2023 he had loan spells with Brasil de Pelotas in Serie C, playing three matches, then ABC in the second division, where he made 27 appearances and scored two goals.

While a centre-back by trade, he can also cover left-back and defensive midfield, as he did in the Copinha.

His younger brother, Gabriel Côco, is in the Santos academy and struck the winner in the 2023 Copa Votorantim under-15 final.
