Saudi Arabia head to the 2026 FIFA World Cup chasing a knockout-stage breakthrough across seven previous attempts.
The Green Falcons reach a third successive finals after a turbulent qualifying journey that needed a fourth-round playoff to secure their place. Memories of Qatar 2022 still resonate, when their stunning win over eventual champions Argentina shocked the football world. Sustaining that level remains the challenge.
The path to this tournament took a dramatic turn earlier this year. The Saudi Football Federation sacked Hervé Renard on 17 April, turning to Greek coach Georgios Donis just weeks before the finals. Donis has spent much of his career in the Roshn Saudi League and confirmed his final 26-man squad ahead of FIFA’s 2 June deadline.
Captain Salem Al-Dawsari leads from the front at Al Hilal, the squad’s most experienced figure. The winger famously scored the winner against Argentina in Qatar. RC Lens right-back Saud Abdulhamid is the only player based outside the Saudi domestic league. The 26-year-old joined Lens on loan from Roma during the season.
Every other player in the 26 plies their trade in the Roshn Saudi League, an unusual concentration at a modern World Cup. Mohammed Kanno anchors the midfield from Al Hilal. Firas Al-Buraikan, the Al-Ahli striker, leads the line up top. Saudi Arabia’s deepest World Cup run remains the last 16 in 1994, their tournament debut.
Group H pits them against Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay, European champions Spain and tournament debutants Cape Verde. Uruguay open proceedings in Miami on 15 June. Spain follow in Atlanta on 21 June. The final group game against Cape Verde in Houston on 26 June could decide a knockout berth. Donis has urged realism over romance, mindful of the gulf in class his side will face.
