Scandinavian media have condemned Norway’s World Cup quarter-final defeat to England, 2-1 after extra time, with criticism focusing on referee Turpin and VAR.

The main flashpoint was Jude Bellingham’s equaliser, as it appeared that Orjan Nyland’s long clearance struck an aerial camera cable at the start of the move, despite FIFA’s denial, and its path changed. In that event a dropped ball should have been awarded. Bellingham later completed his brace.

NRK consultant Kristoffer Lokberg told Nettavisen that, if contact with the cable is proven, it would be a scandal and among the biggest in World Cup history, adding he was left speechless. Former midfielder Erik Mykland also called it a scandal, arguing technology meant to help was instead hurting them.

In Aftonbladet, Swedish journalist Erik Niva likened the footage to the Zapruder film of Norwegian football, a reference to the 1962 recording of John F Kennedy’s assassination.

Noah Bachner wrote in Expressen that Norway were caught in a fog of confusing VAR calls, and that disallowing Torbjorn Heggen’s corner goal for a shove by Erling Haaland on Elliot Anderson was an overreach. He argued corners are typically chaotic and the push was nothing out of the ordinary.

Haaland said in the mixed zone that if that is a foul he should receive one in almost every duel because he is constantly pushed and pulled, and he called the decision poor. His father Alfie posted on X, congratulating Bellingham and the referee.
