Former Manchester United star Scott McTominay has received another honour from his country.

The Scot would go on to play 255 times for the Red Devils, scoring 29 goals. He was a first-team regular under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but saw his role slightly reduced under Erik ten Hag.

McTominay was sold in 2024 to SSC Napoli and took Italy by storm, winning the Player of the Season award as his side were crowned Serie A champions in 2025.

He has continued to impress, scoring 27 goals in 80 matches for the southern Italian side. The midfielder’s rise can be seen in the fact he was listed 18th in the 2025 Ballon d’Or race.

Scotland form

McTominay has also been highly influential in his country’s success of late.

He scored copious amounts of goals as Scotland qualified for Euro 2024 and was also huge for his nation in their road to the World Cup this summer.

This can be seen in his stunning overhead kick which opened the scoring in Scotland’s 4-2 victory over Denmark at Hampden Park, which sealed their spot in their first World Cup since 1998.

In preparation for the tournament next month, the moment has been captured for the Scottish people.

The BBC report that, “a limited edition £20 note featuring an image inspired by Scott McTominay’s famous overhead kick has been unveiled by the Bank of Scotland.”

The article continues that, “the design combines traditional banknote elements with imagery of McTominay’s goal for Scotland against Denmark.”

Just over 100 notes have been printed, with about 50 being available through collector auctions and a prize draw in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Commenting on the honour, the Carrington product stated, “reaching the biggest stage of world football is something every player dreams of, and I know it means everything to our fans. Moments like that belong to everyone who follows the team, so seeing my goal featured on a Scottish banknote feels incredibly special.”
