A second Italian source has now confirmed Celtic’s reported interest in Atalanta defender Mitchel Bakker…

The Dutchman appeared in connection with the Hoops again after several years, where the club had previously tried to snare the utility man.

TuttoMercatoWeb had reported the initial interest in the left-back who can also play wing-back previously, stating that the Bhoys had reignited interest in the Atalanta star.

That has now been confirmed by a second source in Italy, who state that Celtic are indeed looking at Bakker as an option, as the deal for Marcelo Saracchi mysteriously fizzes out day-by-day.

AtalantaOggi.it have now confirmed that Martin O’Neill and the recruitment team are actively looking at the man who has one-year left on his current deal at the Bergamo side, and could be an attractive option for the Scottish Champions.

Bakker has played for numerous clubs in the past, including Ajax, Bayern Leverkusen and reigning European champions Paris-Saint Germain, where he played before moving to Italy with Celtic’s old foes.

It’s an open secret now that Celtic’s need for more additions is a pressing issue, as the manager has bluntly come out and stated that this squad, under its current state, cannot compete.

That should be a major warning sound to an executive Board who have come too close to the edge too many times now. Last year’s abysmal campaign should have been enough to see radical change at the football club, yet instead we are dished up more lame excuses for a lack of transfer activity.

With Kelechi Iheanacho knocking us back for Bursaspor, serious questions must now be asked about the mandate for the current CEO, Michael Nicholson, to continue in his post. The former club lawyer has proven on numerous occasions now that he is fundamentally unfit for the rigours of the job role he has at present.

The club is suffering through this inadequate relationship and it is high time the principal shareholder decided to put the club first.
