Vasco fell to 16th, two points above the Z-4, after a 3-0 home loss to Bragantino that triggered the first boos for Renato a little over two months into his tenure. According to Globo.com, he was also insulted at São Januário.
Tension is rising before two more games at São Januário and the World Cup pause, with three straight defeats and four without a win.
The defence has shipped 12 across those four, the slide starting against Paysandu when Saldivia’s own goal levelled the tie before progress.
At centre-back, Saldivia and Cuesta have struggled alongside Robert Renan. Against Internacional, Cuesta misjudged the opener, was sent off and received a 0.5, the lowest rating for a Vasco player this season.
Restored versus Bragantino, Saldivia’s poor back-pass let Fernando beat Léo Jardim to seal the 3-0.
Even so, the hierarchy are not planning a change, viewing Renato’s work as broadly positive and the defeats driven by individual mistakes.
Rotation at Olimpia in the Sudamericana sparked anger. A win would have clinched Group G, but defeat leaves Vasco needing help to finish first and at risk of the play-offs.
After Bragantino’s third, Renato responded to abuse with ironic gestures, prompting cups to be thrown. He stayed on the bench as assistant Alexandre Mendes took charge, fans chanted “covarde”, he skipped the press conference, and supporters confronted players on Monday. Vasco now face Barracas Central on Wednesday, needing victory to chase qualification and to ease the pressure.
