Other than a midfielder, a goalkeeper signing is one that most Manchester United fans feel the club should prioritise before deadline day.
Pundits and fans alike would hand Ruben Amorim a top shot-stopper in a heartbeat, especially given the narrative that Arsenal’s goal in the 1–0 defeat was partly Altay Bayindir’s fault.
Bayindir looked composed against Arsenal, and his passing was immaculate. But his error for the goal triggered deja vu for supporters still haunted by last season’s goalkeeping mishaps.
Time and again last term, United played well only to drop points due to costly mistakes between the sticks.
While it is not certain, it would not be surprising if INEOS pulled off a late goalkeeper signing.
If they are planning to do so, they had better be working behind the scenes because their noisy neighbours, Manchester City, appear to be meddling in their plans.
Initially, United were strongly linked with Gianluigi Donnarumma. But once it became clear Paris Saint-Germain wanted the Italian gone, it was City who reportedly began pushing hard.
Interestingly, United seemed to distance themselves from the Donnarumma chase.
Instead, reports now suggest that if the Red Devils move for a goalkeeper, it will be Senne Lammens.
Teamtalk claims, “United sources say the club are convinced they would win the race to sign him, but they now need to be decisive in terms of activating a plan.”
The young Belgian has been heavily linked with United and has even publicly hinted at his desire to make the switch.
As United hesitate over the deal, City appear to have abandoned their pursuit of Donnarumma and are now keen to beat INEOS to the Royal Antwerp keeper’s signature.
“Manchester City exploring Senne Lammens option,” claims Sacha Tavolieri, in comments relayed by Give Me Sport.
“Man City facing difficulties in negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain, who demand a fee deemed too high for Gianluigi Donnarumma, and have recently turned their attention to the Belgian.”
United fans reading such updates will be wondering what it is about City and their obsession with United’s goalkeeper targets.
Still, with City only in the early stages of the Lammens chase, United, who should be closely monitoring the Belgian’s situation, have time to act.
One might argue that City’s withdrawal from the Donnarumma race presents a golden opportunity to land a Champions League winner.
However, this could be a ploy by the Cityzens to drive down PSG’s asking price.
United must stay focused and be ready to get their man. For them, the real prize is Lammens, a goalkeeper who could shape both the present and future of Amorim’s project.
That said, Fabrizio Romano’s latest on Lammens, as relayed by The Peoples Person, lifts United’s hopes in this Lammens chase.
