Racing Santander have announced the return of academy graduate Sergio Canales, 16 years after he left, following his spell with Monterrey.
According to Diario Vasco, he is their first signing for 2026/27 and the 35-year-old has signed until 2028. The move was confirmed with an emotional video as the Cantabrians prepare for their return to the Primera División.
Canales enjoyed a notable spell at Real Sociedad, joining in the 2013/2014 winter window and departing in 2018/2019. He made 152 competitive appearances, scoring 13 goals with 17 assists.
He came through Racing’s academy before moves to Real Madrid and Valencia. After leaving Real Sociedad he signed for Betis, then spent the last four seasons with Monterrey.
His re-debut for Racing will come against Real Sociedad in their first pre-season friendly. The fixture has no kick-off time yet, but it is set for 18 July at Estadio Zubieta.
It will also be a notable meeting for Artiz Aldasoro and Marco Sangalli, who are in the Racing squad. Aldasoro extended his deal at the end of last season to June 2029, while Sangalli’s contract expires on 30 June and his future is undecided.
