For Martin O'Neill's side - previously in the dugout for Celtic when they faced the Rossoneri in a goalless Champions League draw in 2004/05 - the match against AC Milan will be the final game of three friendlies. The run began on 14 July away against Sporting Lisbon and continued four days later at home against Middlesbrough. Celtic v AC Milan will take place on 25 July, with each team at a different stage of their pre-season. The Scottish Premiership season begins on 3 August, just nine days after the friendly with the Rossoneri, while the Serie A season begins a month after the trip to Glasgow. Celtic will use the match to complete their preparations ahead of the new season, while Amorim's AC Milan will just be getting stared with their summer prep following the training camp.

The history between Celtic and AC Milan is rich, with plenty of unforgettable moments and some legendary names. On 19 February 1969, in the European Cup quarter-finals, AC Milan travelled to Glasgow and withstood relentless Celtic attacks, holding on to a 0-0 draw that secured qualification in a fiercely intense atmosphere. At the time, it was called the "Battle of Glasgow". It was during that historic trip to Glasgow in 1969, and the following match in Manchester, that AC Milan goalkeeper Fabio Cudicini earned his legendary nickname, the "Black Spider". Glasgow also holds a special place in Rossoneri history thanks to Gennaro Gattuso, who was given the nickname "Braveheart" by Rangers fans because of his incredible determination and fighting spirit. Two players have represented both clubs: Diego Laxalt and Massimo Donati, who both joined Celtic after spells with AC Milan.
