Serie A refereeing designator Gianluca Rocchi has decided to abolish Federico La Penna after a horror show in February’s clash between Inter Milan and Juventus.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport via FCInterNews, the 42-year-old could return to officiate Serie A matches this weekend.
Federico La Penna made a mess in the latest edition of the famous Derby d’Italia.
Indeed, Alessandro Bastoni faked a foul, tricking the experienced referee into sending off Juventus star Pierre Kalulu.
However, Bastoni’s actions have turned him into one of the most unpopular figures in Serie A.
Meanwhile, Rocchi had no choice but to suspend La Penna, relegating him to Serie B.
As a result of his poor decisions in the derby, Le Penna has not officiated Serie A matches for two weeks.
Instead, he has been assigned to Serie B fixtures while Rocchi reviewed his performance and considered whether to reinstate him for the top flight.
However, La Penna is reportedly on the verge of returning to Serie A, with Rocchi set to clear him for top-flight duty this weekend.
It’s still uncertain how Serie A fans will react to La Penna’s return, given the controversy he caused last month.
