Fiorentina produced a free-scoring display to condemn leaders Roma to their first defeat of the Serie A season at the weekend. Elsewhere, Juventus’ shaky start to the campaign continued with a narrow loss against AC Milan.

Here’s how the latest round of results in Italy’s top flight unfolded.

Fiorentina thrash 10-player Roma

Roma had a game to forget in Friday’s away meeting with Fiorentina. Iris Omarsdottir slotted the ball in from Sofie Bredgaard’s through ball, before Roma’s Winonah Heatley was given her marching orders in the 22nd minute for two bookable offences. Fiorentina made full use of their numerical advantage in the opening stages of the second period. Olivie Lukášová was unable to keep out Bredgaard’s sublime lob from distance, just moments before the goalkeeper made a costly mistake for the Denmark international to grab her second of the game.

The two sides then exchanged own goals, before Manuela Giugliano scored from the penalty spot to reduce the deficit to two. However, instead of mounting a fightback, Roma conceded a fifth in stoppage time at Stadio Curva Fiesole. Emilie Woldvik netted her first Serie A goal to wrap up a resounding victory, moving Fiorentina up to second and to within two points of Roma.

AC Milan edge out Juventus

Juventus suffered their third defeat in five league games in Saturday’s away clash with AC Milan. Evelyn Ijeh opened the scoring in the 20th minute at the Centro Sportivo Vismara. The Sweden international prodded the ball in from Monica Renzotti’s near-post cross. The hosts were unable to hold out until the break, conceding an equaliser in first half stoppage time. Juventus striker Cristiana Girelli tucked the ball home from Barbara Bonansea’s cut-back to net her second league goal of the season.

However, Juventus soon found themselves searching for another equaliser following Chanté Dompig’s 65th-minute effort. The 24-year-old pounced on a loose ball in the box to lash it into the top corner. Dompig’s first Serie A goal of the season proved enough to condemn Juventus to a narrow loss, leaving the reigning champions in sixth spot and five points adrift of the summit.

Sassuolo stage comeback

Inter spurned the chance to take three points from their home game against Sassuolo. The hosts looked destined to win when Tessa Wullaert netted a three-minute brace. The Belgian international scored from the penalty spot, before her near-post strike proved too hot to handle for Solène Durand. The visitors at least halted Inter’s momentum with Lana Clelland’s 21st-minute effort. Sassuolo completed the comeback in the 83rd minute, when Lina Chaib rifled home a long-range effort to rescue a valuable point for her side.

Ternana’s struggles continue

Ternana are still searching for their first points of the season after losing to Como at the weekend. Nadine Nischler netted a brace before Matilde Pavan whipped a corner in off the far post to give Como a commanding three-goal lead at the break. Valeria Pirone got Ternana on the scoresheet in the second half, scoring from the spot either side of an Alex Kerr effort as the hosts fell to a 4-2 defeat.

As a result, Ternana are five points adrift from safety, while Como are in fifth spot with nine points to their name.

Lazio, Genoa strike late for three points

Lazio looked set to play out a goalless draw in their home meeting with Napoli. That was until Martina Piemonte snatched all three points with a dramatic winner in the fourth minute of stoppage time. The Lazio striker produced an acrobatic volley from Antonietta Castiello’s lofted cross to fire her side to their third win of the Serie A season.

Like Lazio, Genoa netted a late winner to take maximum points from Sunday’s home clash against Parma. As the game entered the 88th minute, Heidi Gilles stepped in to intercept a Parma pass in her own half, before playing a long ball over the top for Caterina Bargi to collect. The forward showed great composure to bring it down and pull it away from two Parma defenders, creating the space to drill a low shot past Camelia Ceasar. Genoa celebrated back-to-back home wins, while Parma have now gone three games without a win.

Did you know?

Juventus are the joint-second lowest scorers in the league with just four goals to their name after five matches. Even basement side Ternana have scored three more times than the defending champions, highlighting a key area for improvement if Max Canzi’s side are to start moving up the table

Best Serie A goal of matchday five

There were a number of contenders for goal of the weekend, including Bredgaard’s lob and Piemonte’s acrobatic effort. But we have given the nod to Sassuolo’s Chaib.

The 18-year-old made it a day to remember when she fired past Cecilía Rán Rúnarsdóttir to score her first Serie A goal and salvage a draw for her team.

Serie A matchday five results in full
